Important Hurricane Safety Tips – Evacuation and Generator Guidance

If you’re in an area vulnerable to flooding or an evacuation zone, please review the following important information for both evacuation preparation and generator safety.

Evacuation Preparation:

If you live in a flood-prone area or an evacuation order has been issued, be sure to prepare to leave your home safely.

  • Turn off the power to your home. This helps prevent electrical surges and damage.
  • Shut down your generator. You can do this by either:
    • Pressing the off button on the generator.
    • Turning the small switch on the back of the generator to the off position.
  • Unplug appliances and electronics to avoid damage from power surges.
  • Secure your emergency kit with supplies such as batteries, flashlights, important documents, and medications.

For detailed evacuation steps, consult the following checklist:

  • Plan ahead: Know your primary and alternative evacuation routes.
  • Pack essentials: Take your emergency kit and any necessary belongings.
  • Stay informed: Tune into emergency updates and follow official instructions.
  • Stick to evacuation routes and head to your designated evacuation area.
Shut down your generator if you are evacuating.

When Sheltering in Place:

If you are staying home, ensure that you:

  • Cover windows with storm shutters or marine plywood.
  • Take refuge in a small interior room or closet, away from windows and glass doors.
  • Conserve your phone battery for important updates or emergencies.
  • Unplug your devices to protect against power surges.

Generator Flood Safety:

If your home experiences flooding, do not run your generator if water has intruded into the generator enclosure. Running the generator after water exposure could cause permanent damage. In some cases, we may be able to salvage a generator after minor flooding, but this is much more difficult if it has been operated while flooded or during flooding.

Your safety and the health of your equipment are our priority. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns about your generator or hurricane preparedness.

Stay safe,
